Trade M3 for Boxster Spyder?

Need some opinions...

Let me start by saying that I love my M3. It is a technological marvel from the engine to the EDC, plus it's a sexy vehicle. I've owned an e36, e46 and this e92 M3 so I'm definitely a loyalist.... However the Boxster Spyder has really caught my eye!
My M3 is just my weekend car since I have a DD my job pays for, so practicality is not an issue for me. The spyder just seems like the perfect weekend car - the convertible top, superior driving dynamics, and just being fun to drive. Plus I live in So Cal where I rarely worry about inclement weather, not to mention I swear everyone and their mom drives an M3 here.
If the M3 was my DD there wouldn't be a question, it's so comfortable and great everyday but I really have an itch for this Spyder.
Should I pull the trigger?!
I feel bad I've only had the M3 for little over a year and I already want something else.

Interesting post. I have toyed with the idea of trading in my E90 M3 for a Cayman R or the '13 Cayman S. I really want to move from the large M3 to a smaller, more nimble two-seater. What is currently holding me back is the amazing V8 in our cars, and the practicality that the E9x M3 affords.

I would never buy a car in California. I have been spoiled as a California resident living in Oregon where there is no sales tax, thus why on Earth would I ever buy a car that is way overpriced and has tax in California? No thanks. Not worth my time or money. Sorry just my rant on California and their bullshit prices and taxes.

Anyway....

I toyed the idea of a Porsche Cayman S or R and saw them and couldn't really get into them because they need some work to get them to where I would like them to be = to much money. I have a 2009 X5 for my daily driving and M3 for weekends but honestly if you leave the E92 M3 the next step up if thats what you are going for would be nothing less than a Porsche 911, Gallardo, R8, ZR1, etc.

The Porsche Cayman S/R is a rival of the 2006-2008 Z4MC so that is a step back in reality (well that is up for debate). Even the R with more power is still a rival of the E86 Coupe, not the E92 M3 or the new F series M3/M4.

They just sit on lots up here in the PNW and don't move. Well the prices move south. lol

I say don't do it. Not worth it.

Why not? If the M is a weekend car and the Boxster will be too then go for it. A two seater convertible sports car is a lot of fun especially in your climate. Make sure you get the Boxster S with 20" optional wheels. The car looks fantastic. I actually just got done building one online prior to this thread.

The Boxster S is the perfect weekend car.

I still love love my M3 but have lusted after the Cayman R recently, too.

I track my M3 though, and really appreciate the practicality of loading up my DD with all my track wheels, tools, jack, canopy, cooler, etc, and going to a weekend event. All the Porsche guys are jealous when I show up and dump all that crap out in the paddock (sort of like that old schtik with the dozen clowns getting out of a Volkswagon beetle). They have to trailer it (heaven forbid) or skimp on all the track gear.

I'm not really a vert guy, but if I lived in Cali I might go for the Spyder, too!

My thinking on this hasn't change much over the years.

And that is, if you genuinely don't need a back seat, never buy a car that has the built in compromise of being designed around a chassis that must accommodate one. The reason is, you'll never get optimum performance with that baggage in tow.

It is rather like choosing a mate. If you don't plan on having kids, please don't choose a wife based upon the criteria of her motherly capabilities or child rearing/raising potential. If you do, you are bound to look at others in your same no-offspring situation with envy.

One was running in my group at Lime Rock a few days ago--well-driven and fast, about the same pace as my M3. Unfortunately, his mom was there in the paddock in her Mercedes and accidentally ran over his convertible top sitting on the ground.

Fair point. I had the thought briefy, and will probably do it soon, but to be fair to the OP as well, he wasn't so much comparing the two cars as he was comparing practicalities and sensibilities at play here.

He took the top out of the little storage place in the car to race then, I take it? I suppose I understand removing everything for the purposes of shedding weight, but doesn't the top weigh like 10 lbs?

Without a doubt, if you can afford it, you should get the Boxster Spyder.

Get the Spyder. I thought about getting one as well but decided I need the rear seat of the M3.

I live in So Cal as well, and I rarely see Boxster Spyders. That rarity adds to their appeal.

I went the other route. I traded my Caymen S for the M. I am a huge Porsche fan and will probably pick one up again some day. But after owning both I think the M has more fun factor. The Porsche turned more heads though. The spyder would be a great car is Southern Cal. You can't go wrong either way if you ask me. Both are engineering marvels and fun to drive. Just don't be upset when M3's are looking at you in the rear view.

I didn't know there was a storage spot onboard the Box Spyder for the top. But, yes, it was on the ground in the paddock. He didn't have a lot of other stuff next to it, so it was probably pretty easy to not see, especially from the perspective of another driver. His mom was spectating, then hopped in her car in the paddock to drive off. I was walking by and we all heard a sickening "crunch" as she started moving. She stopped, slapped her hand to her mouth, and a passerby slid it from under her car, saying "Yep, it's dead."

I don't think it'll be possible to be upset over this for 2 reasons:

1. the Spyder is a very special car, and so immensely fun to drive

2. stock M3s will have a hard time getting past a Spyder in a straight line
