Range Rover Sport VS Bmw X5 3.5

Considering picking up an SUV and want to see if anyone has any experience with these two. Mom has an X5 and loves the car. Love the look of the Range Rover but hear horror stories about the reliability. Will only own the car 5 years anyway however. Any input is appreciated
Thanks guys

I have both. I DD a RRS Supercharged and my wife drives an X5 4.8. I have spent quite a bit of seat time in both. The RRS is definitely more truck like, and while it does have all the nice creature comforts etc, it is not the same ride as the X5. X5 is more comfortable and surrounds you better. My wife likes the visibility better of the X5 with the large rear passenger windows and prefers the tighter steering of the X5 as do I. (has the sport package).
I personally like the seating position of the RRS better and do like the looks of it. You really cant go wrong with either. Just seems like every wife in the neighbourhood drives an X5. lol

Seating and cargo space is pretty similar. RRS looks much larger but really isnt - just taller.

Drive them both back to back if you can and make a choice. You really cant go wrong. I have had zero reliability issues with the RRS. (or the X5 for that matter)

Both the X5 and RRS are 08. I am going to get my wife a 12 X5 (next week) and thinking of doing the same with the RRS. The new RRS Supercharged is a beast, but honestly the HSE has plenty of power now compared to 08.

Yes looking to get 2012 in both. Mom bought the 2012 X5 3.5 in December and the family loves it.

X5 is great - if I had to give up one, I would give up the Rover since my wife would drive it mostly. Drove both versions of the 12 RRS - I did back to back and the HSE is pretty impressive now - almost the same HP as my 08 Supercharged. The new supercharged is a beast though.

I am getting the 35 with the Msport for my wife. She didnt want the X5M so I told her she couldnt have the 50i since they are so close in price....lol Flash of the ecu and she will be back to the same power as the 4.8

Good luck with the purchase!

Thank you Jay. If it wasn't for the horror stories of reliability, I would have signed on the dotted line at RR already.

I have an '11 RRS Supercharged and used to own an '02 X5 3.0, so not a very precise comparison. I will say the maintenance is included on the new BMW and not on the RR.

I will add my previous RR was the full size '06 supercharged Westminster.

I absolutely love my latest RR and the reliability in this was has been flawless. Picked it out of the showroom floor in Oct '10 and they delivered to me. :-) We test drove the Porsche cayenne Turbo and the RR full size supercharged but not the X5 and actually enjoyed everything about this car. It handles well, has incredible power (510 hp) and feels very luxurious to drive.

I am a huge fan of the X5 but my gf is a RR fan and since this is her dd...

The electronics, nav etc is much nicer in the x cars. The interface for the entertainment in the RR is very lacking.

Test drive em both. Figure out what's important to you. I personally would be happy with either of them.

BMW X5 2014 BMW X5: Expect to see a fully redesigned X5 by the 2014 model year. The vehicle received its last full redesign in 2007 and a midcycle refresh in 2011.

I drive an X5 5.0 when I don't feel like driving my M, and that thing is heaven. Lots of space, very solid feeling, and really not TOO big for parking spaces and sorts.

I am biased though and have never driven the RR Sport.

Anyone with any input on the best way to negotiate with RR dealers? Seems as if they are much stricter with the amount over invoice they sell there cars and no rebates ever....

Depends on what you want. I wasn't in the market for an X5 3.5 or a RRS HSE.

I was in the market for a 2012 RRS SC vs. 2012 X5M and I picked the RRS SC. The reason is that I actually go off road. On the road the X5M was it. However, with off-road thrown in it was no contest and I got the RRS SC.

I have had no problems with the RRS SC so far - but it's only been 2 months of ownership. I would say - get the X5 if you are going to stay on roads.

I did shop around for an SUV in February. I test drove the X5 3.5d, very nice SUV, awesome hauling power, the only thing I didn't like about it is the "spongy" dashboard. I sat in the RR, did not drive it, played around with the controls. I did not like the inside as much as the X5. I test drove the Cayenne S and bought it right away. IMO It was much better than both cars, with a very nice layout inside. The only thing I hate about it, is where the keyhole is located. Very awkward for me.

OP, how about a cayenne diesel?

I like the interior of the cayenne much more than the other two. personally i would option a base cayenne diesel with black interior and 8speed auto and forgo allexpensive options such as air suspension, nav, sunroof, burmeister, pdcc, pasm, ptv, big 20-21" wheels, etc....really, you won't need them for a family hauler. I can't remember the last time I use Nav/sunroof driving around my city nor do I miss running over pot hole with low profile tires.

this way you may end up spending less money with the cayenne vs the x5/range rover and you will get yourself one hell of a handling SUV with fuel economy to boost. LOL
