It happened to me since the third track day until I installed an upgraded cooler. Also, there's nothing wrong to keep the tranny temp cooler.

Took my car to the dealership today. As far as losing gears my even gears, the service rep just called me and told me that there was a bulletin posted about that problem some time ago, and there's a software update available for my car ('08 e92) that should fix this problem. Strange that I never experienced the problem before though, but hopefully this is the solution.

No word on the limp mode problem/overheat, but I'm very tempted to get the DCT cooler upgrade done by Ricky (wwjd15a) just to avoid any overheating issues altogether!

Any update on the type of cooler used and installation tips? Did you install an oil cooler as well as a dct one? Thanks.

I came across a great explanation on our DCT cooling:

Oil to Coolant Cooling
The M DCT transmission oil cooling circuit consists of an oil to coolant heat exchanger,
an oil to air heat exchanger, a transmission oil thermostat and the relevant cooler lines.
The oil to coolant heat exchanger is part of the engine cooling system of the vehicle.
Mounted on the transmission housing it allows the oil to flow directly from the M DCT
into the oil to coolant heat exchanger.
Engine coolant directly from the cylinder head is pumped to the oil to coolant heat
exchanger by the auxiliary coolant pump and then circulated back to the engine cooling
system. The M DCT electronics can switch on the auxiliary coolant pump as needed.
The auxiliary coolant pump, which is normally used to enhance the efficiency of the
heating system, is used here to warm up the M DCT transmission. This design shortens
the warm up time and maintains the transmission oil in the desired operating temperature range.
After the oil to coolant heat exchanger has brought the temperature of the transmission
oil to above 95°C/203°F, an oil thermostat directs the transmission oil to the oil to air heat exchanger located at the front of the vehicle.

There is always something going on with the dct, ins't there ? Not surprising given the complexity, when you think you've read them all, a new thread pops up. It's been a reliable source of threads to read on the forum for me in slower days.

The aftermarket coolers for a M-DCT will not be priced like an automatic transmission cooler or engine cooler. The M-DCT cooler needs to be able to handle much higher fluid pressures. From the technical manual:

"The normal operating pressure range is between 5 and 20 bar, although it can be increased up to 30 bar if necessary to maintain proper transmission operation."

also:

"The pressure required for the clutches is limited to 18 bar. The clutch is regulated by an integrated proportioning valve."

That puts the fluid pressure through the cooler much higher than the typical add-on style automatic transmission coolers were designed to handle. Also engine oil coolers are not designed around those operating pressures.

If the M-DCT cooler circuit is on the clutch flow path that is still 18 bar or about 261 psi. IF the cooler pops the transmission will be empty very fast.
Remember the cost of the fluid and the car won't move without fluid in the transmission so add the cost of a tow.

i'm not understanding, many people seem to have no issues with the cooling at the track.

op even said he didn't have issues prior, just only the last two sessions. it has to be something else?

Took it to the dealership, they said that although the error message was logged, they could not reproduce the problem so they said everything was fine.

The 2nd track day at streets of willow, at the end of the 2nd session, I lost all my even gears (gears 2, 4, 6). Car would only shift in odd gears, so I took it off the track. I let it cool down again, and I was able to get my even gears back. I haven't taken it to the dealership yet, but got the "limited gears available" error message.

I did some google searching to figure out if a transmission cooler exists for the BMW DCTs, but I could only find coolers for the Nissan GTR and Mitsubishi EvoX. Anyone out there know if a DCT cooler exists for the e92/e90 m3's?

Sort of frustrated, part of me wishes I went with the 6MT so I could avoid these problems... anyone else having these problems?
