Diesels are so easy to make power with if they have a aftermarket tune. Most of the time a diesel will be limited by how much torque the trans can hold. Its so easy to make power due to the fact that diesels dont need to maintain a fuel air ratio. 100 hp bump would be easily within the realm of possibility for a diesel that size. Going to blow alot of black smoke but should be pretty fast in a straight line quarter mile. The weakness would be speeds above 85

Diesels have their biggest advantage during the launch, and before you hit 60mph. That said, on the same testing spot, I have Vboxed a modded M3, tuned 335is, and my JBD 335d. Fact is, the two other cars trapped faster than mine, but didn't break into the 12 second qtr mile range. My 335d did. So, from a standstill, around town, etc, a 335d can definitely give a M3 driver a run for his money especially if he is fighting traction. Hitting a uphill on ramp, full of passengers is where the 335d shines with all the torque. Its insane how effortless it is with almost 500lbs of torque. FYI, the JBD is a simple module that takes 10 minutes to install, and costs a couple hundred dollars. Here is a video of mine running 0-60 in 4.5 seconds even having to shift into 3rd before 60mph...look how effortless it is even starting in 2nd gear!

Also, my best mpg on a 100 mile trip to and from LAX was over 45mpg.
Definitely a blast to drive around town, especially hearing someone trying so hard, shifting through the gears at high revs, trying to keep up with you.

Check out you tube - video of Dinan stage 3 335i vs stock m3 - m3 beat it in track and in drag race to quarter mile. The mods would have to be pretty intensive on 335i just to narrowly edge out a stock M3 let alone what an even heavier 335d with even less horsepower than 335i would need.

I've had a 335d loaner - fast car - don't get me wrong - but even my M3 vert at 4145 lbs stock is definitely faster than 335d stock...

The only place a tuned 335 can beat an M3 is in a straight line. Personally, it doesn't matter to me how fast a 335 is. They are still a 3 series and I drive one almost everyday (my girlfriend has one). When I get back into my M3 the entire car is on a completely different level. The steering characteristics, the engine responsiveness, suspension, etc, etc, etc, etc are all much much different. I can't stand the lag either. It's not that bad on a stock 335, but it annoys me.

No matter how much you tune a 335, the driving experience is nowhere near as good as in the M. No doubt the 335 is still a great car compared to most, it still can't hang with the M. Period.

Did you keep your particulate filters or what ever it's called on a diesel?
I've seen some of the X5 guys remove them and make some good power.

I agree. The other thing that is neglected is the fact that pushing the boost on the turbo to get nearly the same performance in a straight line as the M can't be good for longevity. I know that many will say that it has been "tested", but there is most likely a reason that BMW isn't running boost pressures in this range. It isn't because they want to market an "ultimate driving machine" that is mediocre.

That and I've never had an issue with torque on the M. I typically find that I have to be a bit conservative on the throttle if I don't want to risk an "exhibition of speed" charge.

Yeah, I don't understand that guy, or the whole debate in general. If you have a 335 and its tuned and its fast, good for you. Not sure why you have to go up to an M3 owner and let it be known how great your car is. And then go on to say you spent too much money on your car, I mean, what an ass. If you can afford it who cares how you choose to spend your hard earned cash. Honestly, the guy should've just pulled his johnson out and asked if you wanted to compare sizes, because that is what he was doing.

I drive my M3 because its the car that I want to drive. There are many cars faster than it (some cheaper, some more expensive), there are many cars slower than it (some cheaper, some more expensive), but the M3 does everything that I want it to do. I could give a damn what other people think or what they drive. I don't go up to g35s, C classes, other 3 series owners and tell them their car sucks for such and such reason. If your car makes you happy, no matter what car it is, you'll get the same response from me: "Nice car man."

With all that being said, recently a friend of mine was talking about buying a 335 and modding it so it can be faster than my m3. "Yeah, my car will be faster than yours," he would say. My response: "but you will still be driving a 335." I never heard talk about it since then.

The 1/4 mi numbers, 0-60 etc are all great info sure, but, in my opinion, irrelevant.

I'd take a M3 over a 335, 335D (hence why I have one..) if I can only have one car...

but if I could have the choice of using a 335D as a commuter/daily and my M3 at the track/weekend canyons, then I'd glad do it... even if it means the M3 would sit in the garage 5 days a week.

Torque curve is totally different. I've owned many a Honda/Acura and they have NOTHING down low.

Man m3 drivers take everything up the butt so easily... If i drove up to you in my 335d and said my other car a M3 and i don't drive it because i think my 335d is faster would you call me an idiot? Probably.

The 335d tuned would poop on a m3 from a dig. We all know that. The M3 with it's v8 and high rev's will obviously run it on the highway.

What's with M3 drivers now so worried about other cars being faster than their, just drive your civic m3<<< that's a joke by the way and enjoy it.

Own them both - 335d w/sport pkg is a good commuter car & fun to drive. Bought it to have as a nice reliable car to take on family trips w/o drawing too much attention here in Europe. Don't have to stop for gas every few hundred miles. Lots of pick up when you wanna pass cars, deceivingly quick & holds the road good. Depending on traffic, I generally try to keep it around 110-120 MPH on the autobahn. I bounced off the limiter once 149. Haven't added the JBD because I have the M3 & would be more interested in a real ECU tune. Unfortunately, can't find anyone making a remote tune for US spec 335d's.

No, the 335d is no match for the M3, seriously. Don't see the 335d hanging with the M3 from a dig because of the open differential & lack of HP. Maybe if the 335d had a quaife, it may keep up for a while. I haven't hit the M3's limiter yet & had it past 164 MPH. Seriously, don't think I ever will....
