10 Years Anniversary of Hong Kong's Return to People's Republic of China
On July 1, 2007, it will be the 10th anniversary of the return of Hong Kong from the emperial power of the United Kingdom to the People's Republic of China.
It doesnt seem like 10 years has already past, and it all seems like nothing has changed because China agreed Hong Kong's high level of autonomy in things like legal, judicial, freedoms of speech, etc...little has changed for the common citizen to realize that Hong Kong is no longer a colonial possession of the biggest imperial power of all time. What do you guys think about this issue? Good?? Bad?? Whats it going to be like in another 10 years? I think there are a large enough diversity of people on this forum (even lots of people from Hong Kong) Heres a good special segment on CNN for people to read for some good background info about Hong Kong's history, people, culture, etc: http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/hongkong/

In my opinion it's a good thing that China gave Hong Kong high level of autonomy. In 10 years Hong Kong will still be the same.
But again im not a big fan of Britain giving HK bk to China, but at the same time there is something good about it. |

that i am not sure, but it just didnt seem to be the right time, because there are so many things that werent solved, such as, local elections, immigration laws, etc and consistutions like the "Basic Law" was created in the 80s and rushed to have it agreed on by both China and Britain in time for 1997

Not in a civilized society. They can make as much money as they want and build as much as they want. At the end of the day their government is run by animals.

By the way, the money comment is very wrong. 10 years ago, China had a huge debt. Today they have $0 debt and >$1.5 trillion in savings. If they'd release that money, the USA would be bye bye overnight... So, yes, they CAN make money, and quickly... On the other hand, we have $9 trillion debt that is growing daily. We have no friends left, and loosing them daily. We are well trained and behaved, that stands, it will be hard to change their society behavior... |

Our government is run by animals. But these animals are not allowed to harvest our organs, have horrid labor laws and so on. We also have to realize China does not abide by many laws that other civilized nations do. If they did their market would downsize severly. It was proven during the industrial revolution that America too could make a lot of money if they did not care about laws and ethics. Also remember the U.S. is a huge market for China without us they would lose a lot of cash flow.

The Chinese gov't may have money in the bank, but 1 billion of its people still live in poverty, slave labour still exists, human rights are non-existent, and pollution is extreme. They have a long way to go.

+1 America can not act like the perfect country. But we have learned and now abide by these things. Therefore China has to be judged differently and when China is doing really well you have to ask yourself "what if they had laws and ethics?"

The issue is -- 15 years ago, China was 60 years behing us. 15 years ago, we were ahead of where we're now. China, of course has issues. A billion people living in powerty is huge exaggeration. They have 1.7B people there, almost 6x what we have here, but yet, they managet to get where they are, and to earn WORLD RESPECT -- a thing we're lacking more and more daily. Yes, they are heavily polutet, but that will go away, too, once they achieve the levels they are striving for. One thing for sure, ethics, poverty, cars, buildings...China has made it looooong way since the early 90's. I have been going back there since 1997, and the difference is...enormous... |

The family vacation portion (France, Germany, & Italy) was an incredible pleasure. Chance to meet up with old friends and to (re?)introduce my younger children to places they were too young to remember and appreciate.
The work portions (UK, Turkey, and Pakistan) were a grim reminder of the enemy we face in this war.

The only combined portion was the flight over. We had two weeks as a family then I was scheduled to go to Turkey for work but events intervened.
