Track Pad Recommendations please
My GT3 is gone for the '12 track season so I'll be doing 4-5 days of driver's ed and instructing with my '11 e90 M3. Want to swap out the stock pads on those days. Recommendations please for pads. Don't need full on club race type pads but something better than the OEM's which I want to keep for street use. Part numbers and good place to buy them would be appreciated too.
Thanks.

For a combo street/track pad, StopTech Street/Performance pads have gotten good reviews. Cool Carbon is another one, but I didn't like it so much. Using one pad for both applications sounds like a good idea at first but it's still just an unsavory compromise if you ask me, with both track and daily driving experiences coming up short: they're noisy and dusty on the streets and can overheat and fade on the track.
Most folks prefer to change out their pads for serious track duty and keep the nice, quiet, low-dust pads for home. Ones that perform well on track that I am considering soon are Pagids RS29 and Performance Friction PF-06. Others like Carbotech XP-10 (wore out too quickly for me), Raybestos ST-43 (good price), and Hawk 60/70. Everyone will give you a different opinion. Good luck!

You are right - I was actually going to compare the two and got confused in the process. What Endless compound would be the best for tracking with some street use?

I ran my Pagid RS29s on street for a while last track season, and they performed flawlessly, with no noise, and you get use to the initial bite. I think you can run them daily, I know Im going to throw them in at the start of track season and not take them out till fall next year.

I thought the 2500s were noisy on the street. I'd run Performance Friction PF-Z pads for dual purpose. They're an outstanding street pad. I've got them to fade on longer track sessions, but they do fade gradually. No big surprises.

If you were to compare the DS2500's to an OEM pad, yes, they do make a bit of noise at times, but they are much quieter than any other clubsport or race pads. With a proper burnish procedure there is minimum to no noise at all. Remember, the burnish procedure needs to be repeated once in a while, it's not a one time only after installing new pads and rotors like most people thought. The PF Z-Rated pad is more of a high performance/severe duty type of pad and will likely to fade a little quicker than the DS2500. I would rate the PF Z-Rated pad right where the ST SP and Porterfield R4S category. Performance Friction does offer the 1038 compound that is more suited for high performance street, light to medium duty track use. This pad will perform more or less like the DS2500. |

I have used the Mintex F3R in front and the Mintex extreme in back with good results, but I'm trying the Pagid RS29s this season front and back. Hope they last a little longer and are a little more rotor friendly.

Confirming that PFC Z-rated are virtually silent and are almost as comfortable as stock on the street. They do get slippery on the track (progressively, so rather safe) and if you keep pushing after they get slippery, they get worn pretty fast - I ran through 1/3 of front pads in one session once, before I learned to take it easy once they get to high temps. So if you are reasonably fast, you may want something more aggressive.
