Re: replacing S65 headers with aftermarket.

I am looking for a set of used S65 headers.

Anybody replace theirs, or their complete engine have a set to sell?

Lots of interesting speculation in the thread.

IMHO, and this is just my 02 worth, it's USUALLY possible to improve on a OEM header design if you want better performance in a specific rpm range, other than the target OEM had.

I view headers much like cams. (even with VANOS) cams are designed to be optimal only at a certain rpm. Everywhere else, a bit of a compromise.

Same for headers. I find it almost inconceivable than an aftermarket company will make an overall better AND lighter header given that so few of them form headers as BMW did in this case, or use those style pressed flanges.

So, yeah, if making a header for a race car that only lives between 4500 and redline is the goal I bet it can be done by straightening out the pipes a bit, possibly tweeting the collector location.

But for a street car, preserving LOW torque? I really, really doubt there will be significant improvements, and if so, certainly substantially heavier, more welds, pieced together etc....

Not too surprised the project faded.

But still, anyone with stock headers for sale, please let me know.
