Talking NASA TTA #92 M3 Build...

After a year of debating between various forms of competition in the E92 M3, I've decided to go ahead with NASA Time Trial. I chose TT because the level of commitment is just right for me at this point.

For those who are unfamiliar with NASA TT: each bone stock car is assessed a base class, and based on the extent of modification (points), you may stay in a class or move up to a different class. 20-39 points is up one class.

The E92 M3 (base with no options) is classed in TTB**. The ** indicates that it has already been assessed 14 points without any modifications. This means that I have 39-14=25 points of modifications left for up one class: TTB-->TTA.

I want to stay in TTA because beyond TTA are the free-for-all modification classes, where the M3 will not be competitive and the amount of money you can spend is endless. Also, in the Texas region, TTA and TTB have the most number of competitors which makes it more fun.

So, during the holidays I've created a concept for the build. And I will document my progress as we go through 2012. Comments and suggestions are always welcome

Pretty cool. Sad that a stock transmission can be assessed as an upgrade.

Definitely a fun class. We ran our E92 as TTA for one weekend before the build to SCCA T2. Good Luck and keep us updated on the season.

SCCA is a great place to go wheel to wheel road racing and a really terrible, underdeveloped place to do time trials or track days. NASA is definitely the way to go for this particular kind of crack habit.

Good luck! Which compound are you going to use from Hoosier? When you say "full slicks" I assume you mean the radials, looks like some good sizes in the R80 compound which would probably be good for a one and done TT format, I'm not sure how NASA works if it's a one warmup, one hotlap, one cooldown you probably don't want to get the harder until it's hotter outside

As far as I know in Texas, for time trial NASA is more popular.

The rules are written such that if it is an 'option' from the factory, it counts as a modification. In 2012 rules just released, double clutch transmissions are officially +6 points.

I guess I misused the term. Should be DOT-Approved slick tires, i.e. R6 or Grand-Am Continentals.

Each car gets 4x 20-minute windows during the day to do as many (or few) laps. All competitors run together in an open passing format.

Good luck Richard!

I can see how the DCT tranny would add 6 points. It is going to give you time benefits that many other mods would not.

Subscribed! I'll be launching into NASA Time Trials this year as well... only with my E36 M3 in TTC. (Husband won't let me track the E90 anymore ) I've made it *clear* the E36 is a short-term solution to fine-tune my driving skillz with something lower cost to repair should anything go awry. I will say I'm glad the E90 is 6MT though!

Hey, I know the Rocky Mountain region and Texas region will be meeting up in Hallett this June. See you there?

Looking good Richard. Too bad you had to remove so many goodies in the process. TTA is the way to go in the E90 unless you want to enter the arms race of TTS.
I'll be entering my 2nd full season in TTA with the M3. I managed 2nd overall last year with an engine swapped e30 taking 1st. Funny to think that I was running against a car that was 1400lbs lighter than mine. Your car and mine are similarly built except I haven't done any weight removal and ran nittos because they are more durable. Slicks are 30 points so I think you meant to say dot r-comps? I think 6pts is fair for the dct. You've got better gearing and more ratios than me which do make a significant difference in lap times.
Keep us posted on your results.

I wish I could go to ohio. I'm living vicariously through you right now. lol: Funny story, the year I won TTC in NorCal, I had the right car and resources to go to nationals, but it fell on the same weekend as my wedding. Now every NASA national event falls on my anniversary.

What says "I love you" more than taking your wife to Mid-Ohio?
