1,200 Mile Service overdue

I recently shipped my 2011 M3 (built in August) from Italy and it'll be making it's way to the port on the east coast. The car has 1,077 miles on it and I have to drive it 400 miles to my home in Virginia. Will driving it 200-300 miles over the initial 1,200 mile service create a problem?

Nah...just take it easy and bring it in for service whenever you can.

The 1200mi service is really 1200+/- 300mi. Not like anything special happens to the seals and such at 1200mi exactly. Just drive it as if you are under break in still.

Thanks for the reply. I'm just nervous about driving it past the 1200 service time period. I don't want anything to happen to the engine and I will definitely be taking it easy until the service is complete.

You will be 100% fine my friend! Just respect that reduced rpm! Enjoy and be sure to comment back when your service is done.

I drove my 2011.75 roughly 2,500kms OVER the 2,000kms allotted for break-in period but that's because of the incompetent staff at one of the local dealerships (won't name names). Long story short, at about 10,000kms my engine blew up. They replaced it at the other dealership in Calgary. Don't worry you'll be fine.

I would not worry about it! Just as others have stated, continue to follow the break-in driving procedures (limited RPM, etc etc etc). If I remember correctly, the BMW manual even confirms that it is safe to go past 1,200 miles before the service. I wish I could remember what pages this information was on, but if you have the digital copy of the manual (can get from BMW web site) you might be able to do a search for it.

I think the most important thing here is to ENJOY YOUR NEW M!

I personally wouldn't do it after 1500 miles, you'll be at 1577 so just cruise

I'll be taking it easy making my way down to Virginia but probably constantly watching the instrument cluster for any messages stating I'm over due. I have downloaded the manual and will search for the info. Thanks for the info and oh yeah I can't wait to enjoy the car fully after the servicing. Hopefully I won't get pulled over after driving in Europe for the past 6 years!

I'm going to get to the dealer as soon as I hit home and hopefully it'll be less than or right around 1500 on the odometer. Luckily, the BMW dealer is a short drive from my parents house.

I'll remember that while making the 4 hour journey. I honestly didn't think driving at a constant rpm from time to time would cause harm. Thanks for advice!

Actually BMW advises that you DO NOT set the cruise during the break-in period. I purchased my car from a dealer about 2 hours from my home and they advised me multiple times to vary the RPMs and not use cruise control.

I have no idea why this is, but I followed their recommendations anyway

Well my salesman never mentioned anything concerning using cruise control only to ensure I do not go over 4500 rpm. I did use CC a few times without reading the manual first as well. I doubt I did anything to the car but thank you for pointing that out to me. I literally had the car a few weeks and then had to ship it so I was trying to put some miles on it by driving around. I definitely keep in mind not to use cruise control when driving back home.
