Car drives choppy in the morning

Hi all,

Just wondering if this is normal...i typically warm up the car for about 30 seconds in the morning and it always seem that the ride is very choppy especially when I am in first gear. Once the car warms up further, everything seems fine again. is this normal?

yes.
Do a quick search for "cold start"
Ecu is programed to rev high and ruff until temps increase. I too thought it was of concern during the first week of ownership.

Warming up the engine
During the warm-up phase, the high-performance V8 engine runs a little more roughly due to its emissions control system.

For technical reasons, the exhaust systems sounds slightly metallic when the engine is cold.

This information can be found in your manual on page 121

Unless the OP means the suspension rides choppy, which would be cold oil in the dampers.

Warm up the car for at least 3-4 minutes, you'll notice much more of a difference. Just put a song on, set your nav if you have to, make a couple calls or if you smoke have a smoke. Not that long to wait.

Except that BMW does not recommend you let the car just sit idling to warm up... its been discussed before, apparently they recommend you let it run for 30-60 seconds until the idle relaxes and then don't drive it hard until it fully warms up. It will really only warm up properly/fully when being driven so having it idle for 3-4 minutes isn't helping much aside from engine temp.

no, he's talking about driving in first gear after a cold start. IE, bucking

suspension doesn't need to be warmed up haha.

Agreed. In addition, long periods of idling when cold actually creates more engine wear than driving gingerly to speed up the warm up process.

If your car in underground in a condo, I don't think you will idle 3-4 minutes.

How? long idling will only take longer to warm up the engine. How does it create more engine wear?

BTW: I'm for driving cautiously instead of idling.

When the oil is cold, lubrication is not as effective. Driving the car gingerly heats up the oil more quickly than idling thereby shortening the amount of time the engine is being lubricated by cold, thick oil. The difference is minor but over the lifetime of the engine it will add up.
