Nov 13 Houston BMW CCA Autocross

I've done a few AX's with Houston BMW CCA and it's a good time. There's one coming up on NOV 13th that I am attending.

For me, it's as thrilling as the big track (if not more). It's intense! It just a different ballgame: fast, reflexive. Like boxing (AX) verses wrestling (track time). If you haven't done one, you should try it.

Oh and it's super cheap - like $35 or something. And instructors are present for nothing extra.

It's at the HPD Training Track and you don't have to be a member. Details are here.

Chime in if you are going and I'll be sure to introduce you around and hook you up with an instructor.

Cool! I'd love to see you out there. The jetta would be fun, but I think you'll wish you had the M.

I dunno if the throttle is just too touchy in 2nd gear (cause that's what you'll be in) but you'll def want the suspension and balance that the M has.

Is it difficult to see the intended path through the cones? Every time I've watched an AutoX video it hasn't been extremely clear where the intended path was.

I might bring the M out there but second gear without MDM would be a smoke show.

Jeremy. The HPD park is a figure 8 track. And you generally know what direction your heading. Plus you actually get to talk the course and see what lines you want to take and what cones might be trouble spots. It's a great event to learn more control. I am even considering doing it. But it's Sunday morning. ( Jesus comes first. Haha . )

I'll be there!

You can see / print the course layout here:
Autocross November 13, 2011 Unofficial
...and then we walk the course before we drive it.

Only a badly designed course gets you lost, and they try to avoid those.

Justin's right: it is intense!

Remeber to register first at DLB Racing.

OK that does look pretty fun..

Is the course pretty clean or is it really covered in gravel?

Sometimes we run the full area. It takes longer to setup, but it's a nice change of pace from just running in the figure 8. At least twice a year we have been trying to do longer courses like that.

yeah, it's kind of tough call when you've got as much power as you do. Still, I'd be pretty surprised if you brought the jetta back a second time. But who knows.

Sometimes seeing the line for the cones is part of the challenge of AX, but it is much much MUCH easier than it looks in videos. In real life, you have a wider field of vision and you can turn your head.

But knowing and planning out the course is part of the game. I've totally stuffed it a couple of times because I blanked out on what was coming next. It's all good times, though.

flav, come on out! Jesus will be there too!

Registered - This should be fun.

Now, what do I need to know? I went out and watched this once and remember thinking that shade and a chair would be nice but I'm sure there are other things too.

Do you guys just use tape for numbers?

Overview. Only real update is there will probably only be two run groups versus 3, so no dead heat where you don't have to work or run.

Video from one of my laps. Drove the wife's E30 M3 with All Season tires. I have lots of excuses for why I was so slow.

I'd be so lost on that track.. I just can't see the path when I watch these videos. I'll stick to the road course!

The video makes it much more confusing than it is. With the course map, walking the course, and understanding what the cones mean you would be fine.

I'm always confused watching video of events I wasn't at because the video perspective is always a little off in some manner.
