I assume that's why cropping is such an important technique for wildlife photogs? So you don't have to switch lenses or move forward/backward dozens of feet, and potentially miss the shot?

I do reframing by changing body/lens combinations. I've got the 500mm on the 7D and the 70-200mm plus the 1.4x TC on the 5DMkII. My understanding does match yours, I thought you were suggesting, in jest, that I'd walk out a 100-yards and ask the buck spread his legs a little and stand so that we could see his sack.

I've spent over 50-hours trying to catch a ring-neck pheasant cock with the sun at my back, right after sunrise. Still don't have the shot in my mind. Many of those hours were below freezing and a few were below zero.

The term "reframing" is also used when you select an AF point, AF and then lock the focus so that you can move the subject around in the frame (out of the center) and still keep it in focus.

Here's one where I got the subject relaxed by telling him what a great package he has and then asking him to stand a little obliquely so that all of us could see his goods.

Oh yeah, and my comment about cropping... how do you plan on doing that if you get the new 1D X? 18 mp doesn't give you too much opportunity to crop, compared to a higher mp camera body.

That's the whole worry. If I do it, then I'll upgrade to the 600mm f/4L IS II. The math is $13000 for the lens and $6800 for the body, minus $6000 for my 500mm and maybe $1000 for my 5D MkII. That's a stout differential.

Lower noise and higher dynamic range will be huge, BUT the cropping down to 50%, which is quite common, might not cut it. The AF looks sweet, as does the 12-fps in RAW, but...

As you see, I'm still on the fence and have months to think about it, but, even price no object, I might not do it.

Not as long of a focal length, but definitely more versatile (minus the added weight).

They won't let me drive an ATV into some of the places I'd need to take that monster. I can hand hold 500mm and 600mm, but that'd be too much.

You know, even with just 12-lbs the problem is balance. Try walking across a log to cross a creek while holding all two careras and three lenses (I've got the 24-105mm in a vest pocket). I haven't fallen in yet, but I've scared myself a time or two.

Ah, Roki 35mm f1.4. Been drooling over that myself, albeit the Canon version. Does the focus confirm work on the Canon with the adapter? Or are you not even using it for stills?

focus confirm only works on Nikon as far as I know, Canon version doesn't even have it, hence the $50 difference I suppose.
my Canon plans for it will be video only until I replace my D3 with the 1Dx. Excited to test its abilities on a wedding this weekend - i just hope it focuses as well as the 35L (no lag or jumping of the image while focusing).

Some folks have claimed that the Nikon focus confirm chip, when coupled with the right EOS adapter, will allow focus confirm on a Canon. I'm just wondering if that's true.

I hear it's easy to focus this lens if you have one of the dedicated focusing screens in the higher end Canons (ee-s?). Once I get a 7D, I may put a split-prism screen in the T1i and use it as a dedicated MF body for the Roki line of lenses.

that i don't know - most EOS-F adapters do not have pass-through connections for the circuitry - actually I don't know of any that do.

can't find a legit split-prism for my D3, but would definitely get the EG-S screen for the 1D.

i know a guy who shoots with a 60D and the 85 1.4 and has an AF confirm chip. Seems weird that the 35 wouldn't have it and the 85 would.

I'm pretty sure the chip is aftermarket. Folks on POTN are always linking to eBay sales for focus confirm chips for Canon. But Nikon version lenses (at least the 35mm) come with the chip already installed.
