Autotrader a bunch of crooks?

I have an ad for my M3 listed on Autotrader
Today I get the first email from someone who saw the ad on AT ( after 3 weeks, and same day my renewal is due)
Here is the text
"Potential Buyer's Comments:
I'm willing to pay 39,800 max for the car. I'm not a red car type of person, so I'm going to have to pay 1500 for a quality paint job. I actually have a $500 deposit on a Lexus IS-F right now, so I don't have much time to negotiate."

And about an hour later a woman calls me from Autotrader asking if I want to renew my ad. I said no sorry I'm not interested, I didn't get any hits from AT, she says yeah but you've only had your car listed for 3 weeks. I said I know but i am still not interested. She said you're asking for too much at 41,000
I said that's currently the cheapest coupe M3 listed on AT, cars.com, eBay or carmax. I told her I've already told you I'm not interested, and I'm never going to place any more ads on AT, and hung up the phone

What do you guys think?
I called the number for the guy several times
Emailed him
No response
I googled his email and number, no results
Looks like a rip off to me
Or am I being too paranoid?

And where can you get a quality paint job for $1500?

lol he's thinking about Maaco. I wouldn't even worry about the guy. Him saying he wants to repaint the car for $1500 would make me not want to sell it to him.

Sounds like a lot of BS. Not sure what is going on with the Used M3 market.

I'll tell you what's going on
Everyone wants to buy a used M3 for 335 money
I've gotten so many offers for like 33-37
I usually reply with an eBay search of a 335
Or ask them to show me a single M3 coupe offered anywhere with a warranty, that is even remotely close to their offer price
Haven't gotten any responses yet

If I was asking 41k and someone offered me 39.8k, I'd definitely accept the offer... it's only 1.2k off. However this guy does seem fishy. Especially the 1500 paint job. I'd leave him a voice mail and see what happens, while not expecting anything to come out of it.

over the last few years I have posted ads for several cars (lowest price and often lowest mileage) on AT and cars.com and not once have I sold a car through those sites. Most times I barely get any response to my listings other than from brokers trying to get me to pay them to list it on eBay.

" hey, sorry...
I decided not buy a car right now, and wait till next year
Sorry to take up your time, its a beautiful car!"

that's odd you have no hits for 41k. how many miles do you got?

The guy who doesn't call you back...not a crook, but hey until he puts up money, talk is cheap.

i was on auto trader trying to buy my car, I've contacted like 5 ads. 4 of those guys probably thought I was a crook, I didn't low ball them, but I never went after their counteroffers.

Lots of lowballers-ignore them, don't even respond. Also-the last 5 or so cars I have sold have all been on the forums.

You can say that again.
Lowballers galore
People don't understand a lot of "steal" often have some sort of history behind them.

i also think a lot of these guys lowball because they think people MUST get out of their cars ASAP and will take a big hit to do so.

Ever had a car listed on Craigslist? that's where those guys feed.

People now think that the CL lowball scheming is the way of the world. I have had some of my best luck when selling a car by putting it on eBay. I have sold 3 cars there so far. Auto Trader has also done fairly well for me as well.

37K miles
that's why i'm not dropping the price anymore
i'm already the cheapest coupe for sale with a warranty
you want to pay mid 30s,
sure, but don't expect a coupe or a warranty
there are tons of sedans with over 50K miles in that price range

There aren't much of any M3s in the 30s.
Don't touch the price.

From my experience, the best place to sell a car is through an enthuisest site like this one. But you need an enthuisest type car not like a Corolla. I got what I was asking for for my last car through a forum, guy picked it up the same week with no bullshitting.

i've sold 2 cars through autotrader this past year. from what i've experienced, i didn't get a huge number of hits - not counting the sleezy brokers - but usually got a handful of bona fide buyers. most flaked, but it only takes one.

in comparison, craigslist was a complete fail for me with very little interest. of course ymmv.

i'm not sure why you're not getting more interest.

Put my old car up on cars.com and craigslist. Got a few nibbles on both but sold it to someone from craigslist.

Got more than what I expected for it. Was worth about $6k in it's condition, was willing to part with it for $5k, but got someone to pay $5800. Not too shabby.

People will definitely lowball though. I had people offer me as low as $2k and $3k, I literally laughed at them. When they called me and gave me the offer I laughed and hung up. Stick with what you're asking. When you get to the $1-$1.5k difference area, then it really doesn't matter all that much. Remember they have to shell out some extra cash for sales tax too when they go to register it, so that is a big reason why people lowball you.
