2012 and new emission standard

I am wondering what ended up happening with the 2012 models and the new cafe standards? I am glad I got my car before that as who knows what they had to do to the exhaust system. Anyone know any details or loss of power?

No 2012 M3 has been delivered in the USA yet.

There are no drivetrain changes for the 2012 M3. The biggest change is that, due to the changeover to the F30, there is no M3 Sedan. The M3 will continue in the coupe and convertible.

According to the latest news on the F Series M3, there actually WILL be an M3 sedan.

EDIT: Oh, you meant an E90 Sedan in 2012, sorry. Yes, that's gone.

mine is currently going through customs/is at the VPC and my CA said that the 2012's need to go through a set of approvals before being released. Maybe the new emission standard is one of the approvals they need to go through.

Yes I know there is not advertised "difference" but at the same time there apparently is some new emissions standards that every 2012 car needs to meet. So that was my question is whether or not that was some exhaust system changes to deal with this. I know there is no other changes to the 2012. Guess we will just have to see if anyone dyno's a 2012 but even then I am sure any change in hp would be pretty small even if there was some more stringent cat's implemented or something

I was very aware of this emissions issue and was one of the reasons I went 2011. I hope the 2012's are exactly the same but I didn't want to risk it.

Do we have any confirmed/official information on this?? I will be ordering a 2012 soon, but dont want to get stuck with a "restricted" car ........ man this suckssss....... ..... everytime I try to get something, EPA plays spoilsport.....same thing happened with my motorcycle....aaahhhhh...

guess i'll ask the dealers and ryan about this, maybe that will shed some light.......hopefully its something minor......

Yeah I'm with you. When I ordered my 2008 328i in March of that year I had no clue there were 2 different "N" engines. An N52 which everyone knew and loved and a N51 which was a SULEV and had all this emissions crap on it. Not knowing this and assuming I'd get an N52 equipped car I ordered and guess what I got. You guessed it, an N51 equipped coupe which turned out to be COMPLETELY problem free and I assume just as fast as an N52 equipped car. Having said that I still would've chosen a car with the N52 without all the emissions equipment on it if given the choice. I still question if my car was just as fast as the N52 equipped cars so I feel your pain.

I am willing to bet its probably pretty minimal if any difference but I was still curious. Just because the emissions standards changed, it does not mean that the m3 is even near the parameters of this standard (whatever it is). I bet the m3 is already lower than necessary as far as co2 output and the 2012s just need to go through new testing to pass more stringent parameters. But I do not think this means the m3's prior to this year were putting out a level of CO2 that would would not pass the 2012 standard.

The s65 is a gas hog but is a pretty clean burning engine with relatively low co2 output

x2

By the way, any M3 that got a software update under warranty since MY2008 most probably got some emission-related update as well. I know for sure that my old MY2008 got an update in 2009 that was emission-related.

I did not notice any degradation in performance, only a longer high-rpm start up sequence when cold.
