Whatever tune you give a 1M it will never beat an M3, because it has partically the same engine as the 135i, and no 135i is better than M3.
Frist graph 135i engine, second graph, 1M engine.

BMW Munchen claims that the 1M will not be an M3 competitor. Rep said and I quote,"why would we destroy the lucrative market that we have with the M3?"

Spoke with him at the X3 launch at one of our dealerships.

Man the 1-M torque just falls on its after 5000 rpm. By 6000 rpm, 1-M loses 35% of its peak torque. It only puts out 60% of its peak torque right across the rev range. It is quite pathetic for a so-called M car.

The 1M is ugly and tiny. Looks like a chick car too.

Here's how I look at the 1M vs M3 performance comparison (for what it's worth):

1M costs roughly 70% (30% discount) of the cost of an M3.
The 1M will provide approximately 85-100% of the performance of an M3 (depending on the performance measurement, ie, 0-60, skidpad, direction change, etc).

So, the 1M is an incredible deal for an M enthusiast, even a better "deal" than the M3. The M3 will still probably outperform the 1M, but you've got to pay for that extra performance.

Final observation. Assuming same driver, I would bet the 1M outperforms an M3 on a slower, tighter autocross course. The M3 would outperform on higher speed venues.

Notice, despite the idiotic marketing and publicity stunts by Kay Segler, M division was very realistic about it qualifying as a true M car. They did not even bother putting trademark M-power at the engine cover.

sad but true.... I only wish they put a little more work into the engine. It didnt need to be NA V8, but at least upgrade the performance/turbo setup for an M

Yup, the V8 can really stretch its legs at top range. Re: Nurburing run, I think someone mentioned the M3 was only up 2 seconds before the final straight, where it then gained 8 on the 1M (Sport Auto time).

Meanwhile, here's our forum member Advevo in his 1M doing 8:15 time WITH traffic & accident (which claimed 10-15 seconds).

Yeah I can say that not from M3 experience, but I had a 340hp LS1 (I know, no m3) however, that NA V8 had an amazing, screaming, 4.5-7k range, and I can only image what the M3 8k is like

I would only love to do what that guy did around the ring.... He was riding that bimmers A..

.
This is 100% incorrect!

The 335is has the same N54B30TO that is used in the Z4 35is and the 1M. Here's a link to a technical specifications release from BMW that I had posted earlier showing the the 335is as having the N54B30TO variant - https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/press...hmentId=172566.

The 320 HP rating of the 335is is supposedly due to a more restrictive intate on the is. But this lower rating is open for debate as it's unlikely that intake variations alone would account for 15 HP diff and early 2011 tech specs, manual etc., had the 335is listed at 335 hp. This is more than likely a marketing decision to not appear too close to the M3 numbers. The 335is dynos I've seen, the numbers are close to the 1M - anywhere from 295 RWHP to 315 RWHP, depending on the dyno conditions.
