Traded my M

Well guys, it has been three years and 46 thousand miles since I signed on as "newm3driver". Undoubtedly, the M delivered more smiles per mile than any BMW I've owned over the last 30 years, and there have been many.

I have gone back and forth in my mind so many times.... "the handling and perfect balance are the best things about this car..." and then I would step on the gas in 2nd or 3rd and say to myself, "no, it IS the engine..." because stepping on the gas and letting it rev was, simply put, intoxicating. If I'm being honest I felt a little bit sad as I got out of the car at the dealer and walked away.

I drove home in a very different vehical, an X5 35i sport. It is Black saffire over a full nappa leather interior, with all the goodies like comfort seats, premium sound, dynamic drive and all the other techno wizardry that BMW packs into their cars these days. The vehical definitely has a presence and is really quite beautiful.

First impressions... The turbo 6 mated to the 8 speed tranny is as smooth as butter, and driving my new vehical home tonight confirmed what I learned in several test drives... the 300hp sixer is more than enough engine for the big SUV, excuse me, SAV, as it moves all 5000 pounds with ease. The cabin is roomy, comfortable and whisper quiet, a very nice place to be. It's never going to dance like an M3, but let me tell you that it handles and turns astonishingly well for a 5000 pound vehicle. All in all, I'm very excited about the change.

I'm sure there will be another M3 in my future, because my first M experince was a very good one. I'll just have to wait a few years to see what the BMW gods come up with on M number next.

It's been nice reading and posting here over the last 3 years. Be well and drive safely.

I've got a 4.8 x5 and love it and was the inspiration for the M but could never give up the M for it, but then again, to each his own, you'll love the "SAV" it is the best put there

Sure. My 3 year lease was up and I really thought I was going to buy it out, but...

It has 46 thousand miles, and to CPO it and get an extended warrenty was like 6500 bucks. The car was perfect for 3 years, but I would not want to own an M out of warrenty. At like 50K (with tax), I'm into numbers that could buy a VERY nice 993C2S vintage Porsche, something I have aspired to own for a long time.

The X5 is definitely a more comfortable, more practical daily driver in snow county, and it now frees me up to beging looking in earnest for that classic Porsche that I will purchase, own and tinker with for ever.

Then there is the thought of an M1 vert...

Well it sounds like you enjoyed the hell out of the car. I don't blame you for considering something classic like a 993. If you want a visceral experience... that's a good place to start!

Thanks, good luck with the search for your Porsche. If you will have more than one car you can also consider earlier 911s, since 993s are overpriced IMO, unless you REALLY like the 993 that much.

Hold onto your nickels and wait for the new M...4?
Whatever it's name, it will be brilliant.
