Thumbs down Arson Attack on Monterrey, Mexico Casino: 52 Dead

Knowing that most members here are from the U.S. I´d like to raise awareness about what is going on in Mexico.

Monterrey is the second most important city in Mexico after Mexico City. It is located in northern Mexico about 300km from Laredo, TX. Yesterday it suffered what is probably the worst attack that we have had from criminal organisations in Mexico during the ongoing, 6 years+ "drug war". Armed arsonists arrived at the place (a small casino), blocked the exits and set fire to it. 52 People are dead, most of them customers of the place.

Most likely this attack is due to the fighting for territory amongst different gangs for extortion money. However, again, it takes the level of brutality to a new low.

These gangs are mostly financed from the flow of illegal drug consumption from the U.S. and mostly armed by U.S. guns. These two facts are, I am afraid, indisputable.

We have a lot of room for improvement in Mexico in many, many ways, but it is unfortunate that we are paying here with deaths everyday for something that is, in a large part, related to the hypocrisy of a society that in fact tolerates drug use and consumption while penalizing the sale of drugs, raising by orders of magnitude the profitability of the trade.

The President (of Mexico) just came on T.V. and declared 3 days of national mourning. In his speech, he called also upon U.S. citizens to reflect on their part on what is going on. Echoing that call, I ask of you:

1. To not consume illegal drugs, that money goes directly to killers and assassins that are destroying our country and we are just as human as you. I used to have a smoke of pot every now and then a few years ago. I have decided since a couple of years ago that even though I think that it is harmless and should be legal, in fact every cent that I spend related to drugs is blood money.
2. That if you believe that consuming drugs is a personal right, do the right thing and pressure on your country to legalize the trade instead of taking the easy way out and just buying what is available while ignoring where your money is going.

I know some of you may think this is Mexico´s problem because we are a bunch of corrupt idiots. We are not.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this whether you agree or not with my reflections on this subject.

i have visted Monterrey regularly for about 26 years - my mom is from there and i have about 5 aunts and uncles that still live there.

last Christmas was the first time in 7 years that i did not travel from Houston to Monterrey via car.

also, last Christmas was the first time in 37 years that my dad did not travel from Houston to Veracruz to see HIS family.

i miss my family and i miss taking road trips there, but there is absolutely no way that i would drive either one of my cars across the border with my family.

i "have" thought about flying, but it's only a thought.

i think my days of going to Monterrey are over

my tio vive en el Obispado (San Nicolas) - right down the hill from the massive flag in the condos on the right side of the road if you're driving up to the flag.

i stayed with him in 2009 when i drove my STi from Houston to Monterrey.......

Plus my post had a bit of humour in it situationally, by suggesting we fund the north of the border "cartels" (?eh?) instead of the south of the border ones.

Yeah it's really sad. Maybe I haven't read up on the subject enough, but in a non-libtarded place such as Mexico, how are they not able to send their armed forces in and do away with the troublemakers? Are the Cartels THAT powerful or is the Mexican government THAT weak?

The cartels basically field small armies. They'll go after the generals and police leaders families, use terrorist tactics to rule by fear, etc. Not to mention the cartels have so much money they pay people off. It's basically a choice to accept the money and look the other way or be killed.

This is the only part I didn't agree with. Penatlies for drug use are just as high as selling drugs. Someone caught with cocaine even just for personal use can face up to 10 years in prison. It's the same for drugs like meth, heroin, etc.

I'm a Cali boy, so repping Cali is standard; especially so since we're talking about our #1 cash crop. You did get a small chuckle out of me with thoughts of funding Canada.

+1

But the answer is probably as you wrote. I would say the Cartels' power is in money and the government's weakness in corruption.

True for cocaine and "hard" drugs but not so for pot. And pot is approximately 50% of total cartel revenue.

Your second option is the only real one: Legalize it.

Or make drugs legal to stop the illegal trade and black markets.. If people want drugs they will get drugs no one gives a shit if its legal or not but at least let them get their drugs from a reputable taxed place.

Does anyone think if weed was legal most people would not even consider harder drugs?

Excellent point, as usual, clue.

Funny how the problems on the southern border are so much more extreme than on the northern border, which is barely monitored in either direction. It's ridiculous Mexico is trying to put this on the US. That clearly isn't the root problem. They need to get their own house in order, like Canada. They need to do something about their authortian, corrupt, weak government.
