M5 has always been about ultimate mid-size luxury sedan. Over time the midsize sedans have gotten larger. The M5 has competed very well with cars in its size. In fact M5 is the reason why 4 door midsize power sedans became very popular.

The last M5 was no feather weight. Yet it was one of the most desirable cars. Because it was one of best midsize hyper performance sedan money could buy. You could take the family out to country club one minute and hit the track the next minute. The M5's are still used at the BMW performance track and have been tracked by many including magazines like Car&Driver Where it even won ONE LAP America racing event in its class. It has been exclusively used as ring taxi at Nurburgring.

I have no reason to believe why the next M5 will not compete well against cars in its class. Such as CTS-V, E63 AMG, Porsche Panamera turbo, Maserati Quattroporte GTS, and Aston Martin Rapide. The funny thing is half of the above mentioned cars have all been trying to copy the success of BMW M5. Yet, in my opinion none of them have been able to capture that magic fully.

The M5 is not heavy at all when you compare it to the above cars in its class. They are all around the same weight give or take a little.

Also, people keep harping about M3 being a track car. It is no dedicated track car much less sports car. Because by definition a sports car is a light weight 2 seater. The M3 is a very nice and fast GT car with useable back seats. If you want just a pure dedicated track car then to be honest Lotus Elise, Porsche Cayman R, and Corvette Z06 performance pkg are more track ready. Does this mean M3 can't be taken to a track.....NO. It can track very well despite its size.

In fact this heavier E92 M3 tracks better then then lighter E46 M3. Ditto for M5's they can be tracked and track better then the previous lighter versions as was the case of E60 M5 vs E39 M5.

Bottom line is every year we go through this. When E92 M3 came all E46 M3 owners were up in arms about how it is a heavy pig with a huge V8. Why no high revving inline-6........because that is what M3 is all about. Then few years down the line you see the same guys trading or selling their M3's for a E92 version....saying there is nothing else on the market that drives quite like the M3 for price and practicality. Also, I can't believe how nice the V8 engine sounds and feels.........praising on and on.......and on.

Ditto goes for the E39 M5 owners. They could not stop 1 sec. without putting down a bloated V10 E60 M5 full of garbage technology like SMG etc.

Being on these forums for many years one thing I have learned. People like to pretend that whatever they own or would like to own is the best thing in the world. Anything newer or different is just garbage.
