Almost ordered a new X5 40d M Sport last month to replace my M3 but at the last minute ordered another M3 - that drive to the dealer to place the order made me think that i'd miss the ///M far too much - i've got 3 kids and could do with a bit more space but you only live once!

Specifically, regarding your question of "what makes you need an X in NY?" I dont have to defend myself to you on why I think I need a bigger car. If you must know, my wife and I have a summer home a few hours away and it's impossible to fill everything in my convertible. SO I wanted something bigger. I rarely actually drive my car within NYC (most people here dont), and use it for weekends and vacations.

My question for you is what makes you think you need an M3 in the an island smaller than connecticut?
That does make a bit more sense, but I would still try to keep the M3 using something like a roof rack to pack up, but that's just me, and I understand your decision.

To answer your question, PR might be smaller than Connecticut but it has a whole lot more road density than the US and probably more road density than Connecticut, so there's quite a few roads to drive on, many of them mountain roads.

The new X5's are great cars. I actually had an x5 5.0 on order before I ordered my m3. Both fantastic machines, can't go wrong either way.

Unfortunately, with an 8 mo old graduating from an infant carrier to a convertible baby seat soon, I've had to grow up and get a family car to replace my e93. I loved my car, but between the baby, my wife, my stupid $800 stroller, and all the other S*** I have to lug around, it's just not going to work. I live in NYC, so can't justify having two cars either (since we use our cars once a week - maybe!)

So, just traded my car in for a used x5 5.0 2011 today.

When I drove to the lot, I considered a new x5 3.5 2012, but after driving the 400 horses and 450/lb of torque in the 5.0, I had to get it. It cost me more, but coming from an M, needed the power. Also, while I love a new car like anyone else... I cant mentally get over the depreciation on day 1 so I like to get my cars after someone else has done that favor for me...

X5 2011 had about 11,8k miles on it and was asking $58,8k (Down from $60k and change two weeks ago). Absolutely excellent condition, flawless inside and outside. Someone took good care of it. After negotiating, the dealer and I agreed on $56,9k and shook hands on that. The trade in value for my 2008 E93 M with 16.5k miles wasnt great, but I'm ok as the price on the X5 was ok. In fact, I prob gave up too much on trade and we agreed on $46.5k. YES YES, I know, if I went private sale I probably cld have gotten another $2-$3k, but I wanted to sell it quickly before the summer is over. When Sept comes, interest will fade for a convert...

SO ALL IN, my trade was the 2008 e93 m3 (16.5k miles) for the 2011 X5 5.0 (11.8k miles) + $10k.

Finally, funny enough, I've only driven my M3 for one full year now as I bought it used with about 8k on it for $56,2k. That means, all in, I paid about $9,700 to drive it for 12 months = $808/month with no money down. Sales tax I paid when I bought it gets transferred to my new car, so I wont count that.

All in all, wasn't a cheap experience to own the M3 and buy my X5, but I think I can live with the deal in hindsight Would be interested to see what others think about my purchase / trade in.

Thanks and good luck all.
LOL!

I just went from an X5 to an M3..

Why didn't you keep the M and get your wife a used minivan?

To answer your original question, I think you did very well for yourself at a cost of $808 per month for the M3. If you end up hating the X5, you can always try to swap out of that like you did with the M3.

i think your only real choice is too move out to long island , come to suffoulk (melville, dix hills, Jericho, huntington). Taxes are less, much more land, and i go door to door commute 1 hour 5 minutes each way. Plus i have 3 cars + 1 on the way and still have much more room left.

Thanks all for the supportive and funny replies...

parking in NYC sucks, but nothing you can do about it. Having a car in NYC is a luxury in itself, so we chose to move to the bigger car.

re bugaboo stroller, i hate it, but wife made point of "how can you get yourself a m3 and not get your son the best stroller?" duh, the answer is he's 3 months old, but I pick the battles I want to fight and it just didnt work in the e93. Frankly, id be surprised if fit in an e90, but either way, didnt work.

that all said, picked up the x5 today, and the thing has some good power - and torque is very impressive. Ill say, the steering is extremely squashy vs the M and I definitely do not have the confidence to make the exit ramps at M speeds anymore. size wize, however, its like im driving a monster down the road, I can see 10 miles ahead of me, instead of just the car in front, and it's different. I did see a e92 flying by me on 95N and did get choked up a bit...

Ill send some pics of my x5 when i take them (if anyone cares), but here is a couple shots I took of my son in our last day in the M. he's unhappy too... btw, in case anyone asks, NO I didnt drive with him top down...

$800 for a stroller dude??? That might have been the bigger mistake I have two kids, and the best stroller we ever had was the cheap A$$ strollers from Walmart ($20)... lightweight and they took a lot of beatings.
i know.. bugaboo is dumb. bad mistake

NYC as long as I can... then yes, the burbs are calling. funny enough, it's not the parking that will drive me out there... it's the fact that private kindergarden costs $30k...

Thats exactly why parents originally moved my family out. We went to Half Hollow Hills District. Either that or Jericho District would be my choices for kids. I wouldn't go to Nassau IMHO. The difference in travel time if you take the LIRR is 10-20 minutes tops if your on the edge of suffoulk/nassau. But the taxes in Nassau are double, and school districts aren't as good. Also private schools on Long Island (friend's academy) cost about $15-18k i believe and they are top notch.

You are living large anyway dude. Parking can be had much cheaper than $500/mo. $30k year kindergarten is a waste of money. Summer house... WTF, why not 2 cars? Sorry, you sound a bit whipped
Anyway, an M3 cab is just not an ideal car to have if you only have one. You gotta have a sedan at least. Personally, I would never drive an SUV as a primary car. The wife's car, yes, but a minivan will never enter our driveway.

Ok, this isn't StrollerPost.com, but ...

Equating cost with quality is a big mistake. Bugaboos are for being seen with. Maclarens are actually good for using as a stroller for your kid (remind you of someone's favorite car maker?). First off, the Maclarens are incredibly light. They have a model that weighs 10 lbs (probably less than your kid). Bugaboo models weigh 20 lbs or more. For a while you're pushing more stroller than kid. Maclaren's 5-second 1-hand fold claim is no joke. And they fold down into a easy to one-hand carry package. A Bugaboo doesn't fold for crap.

I hope you didn't get the X5 just to fit the Bugaboo. Because you know that in 6 months your wife's going to switch to a Maclaren and you'll be kicking yourself.

... but, I hear ya about picking your battles. Good luck with the new car and kid
