Although it is still early days, BMW M insiders suggest that the new six-cylinder engine will produce more power than the existing 414bhp V8, despite its smaller capacity.
At the recent launch of the hardcore M3 CRT saloon, BMW M development boss Albert Biermann hinted at an output in the region of 450bhp from the new unit.

This move is aimed at providing the next M3 with the performance to match the Audi RS5 and recently facelifted Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG.
But whereas the existing M3 makes do with 295lb ft of torque, the 2014 model is set to pack as much as 400lb ft for further performance gains.

i hope this is false - three sounds better than two to me. The thought of having one electric one could do wonders for throttle response, but it could also mean a host of new problems.

The chance is nearly sub zero that BMW allows the M-GmbH to develop an completly new engine ... also the innovative 3.3ltr.V6 TTT developed from the M5s 4.4ltr.S63 V8 and to my info prefered from the M Technicans was not chosen because its more costly than an development on the N55 basics.

450hp with estimated 400ft/lb sounds incredibly salivating to me, regardless of the number of turbos.

two is plenty, seems like M should try to do a decent sequential setup. Seems hard to size two parallel turbos, either you got lag low down with top end or no top end.

Yes, that's why that info in bunk-tastic.

Same marketing philosophy keeps an S63 out of the M3/4 as well. They aren't going to give the M2 the same engine as the larger sibling. Bet on a (very advanced) I4 turbo.

Even with that in mind, I am still more interested in that car than the next M3.

I am also wondering why there ar rumors about an I6 for the M2 ... it makes only sence if the M3 would get some form of V8 ... to my infos I also think the M2 gets an highend-version of the I4 Bi/(Tri)Turbo. One reason because the S63 is keep out of the M3/M4 is because it don´t fit in the X3M and the Z4M ... also for the F3X it would be an very tight fit.

BMW M is blurring the lines between future 1M and M3's. If I had to replace my M3 in 3 years, I'm not sure I would get another M3 given the cars increasing proportions. The E92 is about as big as I would ever go.

The question is though whether BMW can market an inline-4 M2 when there's also an inline-6 235i. People might feel like 'downgrading'.

and if they give the M2 more power than the 235i then that comes too close to the M3
i hope they don't boxsterize the M2

I think the M2 will have to be boxsterized. I don't think BMW wants anything in BMW's stable too close the M3 in terms of performance. The current 1M is close enough. I think they will give the M2 the inline TT 4 with less weight than the I6 235i to make the performance better than the 235i but no too close to the M3.
