Well, really only one hole is an intake. The other is actually a vent, I believe. Nothing butts up to it.

You really think BMW engineers wouldn't have used two intakes if it resulted in an improvement? I think they are smart enough to know how much air the engine needs.

Exactly. All I need is one hole to satisfy my needs

No it's not. The other one is a dummy, just to make the car look 'balanced' and has nothing to do with venting. Will be the 'fake' intake be used on the CSL? I'm not sure.

So, your saying that the hole isn't open into the engine?

No, of course it is. But it's not there to vent the engine, it's just to make the bonnet (hood) look better. If there wasn't a need for the one intake then there wouldn't be a vent there at all.

If it does help keep the engine cool then that's purely an indirect consequence of the need to make the design look more symetrical.

The M5 and M6 don't have vents on the bonnet, and the E46 side grills were only there for show (harking back to the 507).

Rumour is that the E92 CSL will use both intakes for extra performance.

Wrong. This has been stated many times, but continues to be false. One side cooled engine electronics. Again the second side is for visual balance

At first you say it has nothing to do with venting, then you say it does....

What rumor? I saw one post where someone threw it out there that it could be used for that. That doesn't constitute a rumor.

To say it has something to do with venting implies that it was designed with that purpose in mind. It wasn't. Whether it is there or not has no impact on the engine bay.

There are more forums than this one you know! And besides, I'm saying it now so that makes it a rumour.

This is the first I've heard of this but I'm prepared to accept your explanation.

wasn't it from the 3.0CSL? the 507s, i think, inspired the ones on the Z8 (if not the entire car).

Right, no cameras in the whole BMW M compound in Garching, and the passenger side "vent" is just to balance the design elements. Actually neither were absolutely necessary because they could have pulled the volume from anywhere, but hood vents seem to be the thing as you can see here. Call it class by association.
