Stored audio files

Might be idiot question but my E92 M3 (2008 car) manual says when I connect a USB device the audio files on it are stored in the vehicle. I've tested this and while the USB device is plugged in I can see and play all the music files on it but as soon as I unplug it, there's no evidence of any stored files.

The manual also says I can store files from up to 4 USB devices but does this mean they are only visible when the USB device they came from is connected? Or is there a way of accessing stored files without the USB device being in situ?
