Top speed possible on ED with break-in restrictions honored?
Doing ED first week of August for our e93 M3
What will my RPM restriction be for break-in period? Is this for transmission, engine, or both? What top speed will I be able to attain at this RPM restriction? ![]()

there is a speed restriction as well. I think its 105mph for first 1200 miles. also no revving above 5500rpm and no full throttle. there is a second set of restrictions up to 3000 miles. it will be posted on a nice little sticker inside your windshield when you pick it up. break-in restrictions apply to all of the components of the car as they work together.
search and you will see many many opinions on this. i break in my cars in a very specific manner. no problems whatsoever. since i live in germany i can tell you all about break in over here. just pm me. good luck, congrats, enjoy in good health, and only pass on the left! Watch your mirrors before getting in the left lane btw.

I don't know if this thread is serious? The only restriction on RPM would be from your foot, you can baby it or drive it like you stole it that's your choice.. I'd go with the latter, but hey that's just me

1200 mi / 100mph = 12 hrs
So break it in a day, get the service done, and then have at it for the rest of your trip. Problem solved. Maybe a little aggressive but if I were doing ED I would plan for something like this. I think it would make a pretty cool beginning to an ED journal too.

I did ED last week. I was advised to keep the revs below 4500 and the speed at or below 100 mph. However, I was also told that the occasional burst of speed is perfectly acceptable and that I should "have fun and enjoy the German roads."
YMMV

The thing is, the break-in procedure specifies both a top speed limit and an RPM limit (as specified earlier in this thread).

Yup. Manual is very clear. No more than 4500 RPM and no faster than 100 MPH for up to 1200 miles. If you want the best motor you can have for years down the road this is the right thing to do. If you plan on dumping the car to some poor schmuck in three years do what ever you want (exactly why I didn't buy this car used).

5500 and 105ish. I mostly followed it but the Ring made me a very bad boy.

So...I'm sure the break in guidelines have merit, but at least in Germany, they didn't seem to get too upset over not strictly following it.
