There is so much joy in manually driving my e92 M3. in full control. being able to go from 6th to 3rd just to blast off is amazing. Only girls like DCT for M's. Might as drive with your wee wee tucked between your legs. Ha. jk jk im sure both have their perks. preference is what it is. Im a young guy and I dont drive during traffic usually. SO MT ALL THEE WAY

Well, this certainly isn't how I envisioned my first post on here but this thread speaks to me directly.
After a long history with BMW, a 98 M3 and a 2002 M5 - both sticks (and 6 other non M's), I went with the DTC in my current 2013 E93 due to a medical issue. Decades of gymnastics, martial arts and motorcycle racing left me with 3 lower back operations. Today I have permanent nerve damage in my lower leg. There are times when my calf locks up so badly that I can't walk. Granted this doesn't happen all of the time however the thought of being out with my M and not being able to drive it home forced me to abandon the stick for the DCT. Ironically my wife was the one that wanted me to get my new car in a stick, mainly because she hates change (like most women) and to her credit is a driving enthusiast, like us. I just picked up my car last Thursday and am enjoying the DCT very much thus far. A full introduction post will be coming soon. In the mean time it's nice to be back in the fold of fellow M owners. Safe Driving!

If that's truly the case, it's because the older crowd tends to be better established and in a position to actually afford one (plus get through Ferrari's screening BS). Then again, for every grandpa, there's a Bieber.
Anyway, the manual transmission is definitely a more visceral and raw experience, and perhaps even more "manly", but I dispute that it gives you more control than DCT. If actually shifting yourself in the DCT, you have just as much control over what gear the car is in, except shifts happens smoother, faster and with 100% reliability since there's nothing for your foot to screw up. Not as "rewarding" as getting a perfect downshift in a manual? Maybe. I take my reward from having that effortless kick of acceleration on tap. Kick-down, one flip of the paddle, and off you go. Plus, it's hard to work the stick of the MT, when your girl is working yours. |

6MT. Because I like it. Nothing against DCT drivers. To each their own. I like the added control and constant challenge to be a better driver with perfect rev matches on down shifts. Just more involvement and inherent fun for me.

During the Fall after my C63 Coupe was totaled (SANDY NY), i looked into the M3's because it was the car i always wanted. so why didn't i buy a M3? well non were around and i needed a car. So i gave the C63 Coupe a shot. Then after only 6 Months of ownership she got totaled. So i looked at my local dealer Bmw Hassel and found 4 incredible M3's
1) Fully Loaded Lime Rock Edition 6 Speed 2) E93 White On Red Drop DTC loaded 3) Black on red 6 speed loaded E92 4) E92 White on red not loaded. Reason why i went from a auto to a stick is that the stick in my eyes is more entertain. plus it's a daily driver my M3. I love the 6 speed over the auto i had. but i do understand why people choose the auto, it's easy and effortless. But my opinion is that if your going to get a performance oriented car go get a stick, it's worth it. but if it's like a ford focus then get the auto. Yes my daily is a FiRE Orange car, i love it tho! |

I get that when it was either a MT or a 3 speed torque converter auto then the choice for the performance driver was usually the MT...but now DCTs move the game forward to a whole new level. Its not for nothing that high performance cars manufacturers are going to DCTs. As always, the more newbie the MT owning driver is, the more vociferous his defense of his transmission choice. When you have done enough miles in MTs and perfected everything there is to perfect then manual gearchanging becomes that annoying time when you aren't accelerating . It doesn't "connect" you the car, its not raw or visceral its just plain slow and antiquated, a technique easily mastered by everyone and his grandma. |

The DCT is quicker, smoother, more efficient, more up to date and more expensive. Plus, my wife can't drive a three pedal manual. So why, after 25 years of driving manual transmission sports/sporty cars did I still buy the manual? It's what I prefer.
I am not Senna. I don't drag race. I don't care about bragging rights. I don't drive like a fool on public roads. I do, from time to time, auto cross and I do, nearly every time I drive, enjoy my cars once their warmed up. That's me. I am a little disappointed that the manual transmission in the E90 M3 frankly is just ok. But, I love getting a heel toe downshift right. I like the challenge of getting smooth shifts up and down, even out of a less than stellar transmission. So that, is why I chose the transmission I chose. |

B/c I knew I wanted to go F/I @ some point, and I figured that the DCT would be a weak point as the HP/TQ started to increase. Want more power in a 6MT? Easy as changing out the clutch.
I like MTs so much, I bought a wrecked 5MT Isuzu Trooper to swap the MT into my VehiCROSS. Isuzu didn't have the foresight to make them that way from the factory. Because you like private things? Last edited by whats77inaname; 07-02-2013 at 12:30 PM.. |
