Sound check for dummies

We're currently staying at an hotel overlooking Petco Park in Sandy Eggo. Tonight there is a concert there by a group called Blink-182. Some skateboard punk band that's been around since the early 90's. Their crew spent 3 hours last night running the same sound bite for their sound check. Over and over and over again. And today they've been at it for another 3 hours. Still the same few bars with a heavy bass and drum beat. They must be the world's most incompetent sound engineers.

It's very difficult to dial-in an open stadium... especially one like Petco with its weird shape.

But 6 hours? The last conference I went to was one of the Moody Blues' last shows. Maybe 6 or 7 years ago. It was over in Indy. It was so freakin' loud that I would never have noticed an issue with the sound system.

We just walked back into the hotel coming back from Wifey's conference. I could hear some band playing actual music. Maybe one of the openers. But all we hear in our room is the bass and drums. So maybe that's what I was hearing earlier. The walls are filtering out the high freq stuff and just the low freq stuff is getting through. On Aug 20 there is a concert at Petco with Def Leppard, Journey, and The Steve Miller Band. That'd be the night to stay at this hotel in this same room. Just open the windows and enjoy the "oldies."

Maybe they were just having fun We went to a Weird Al concert a few years ago at the Del Mar Fair. Our seats were about 20' in front of the subs and it was painful. The low frequencies will appear to "travel" further and appear to be louder. They also get through/past more "obstacles."

They also have to make sure no matter where the mics are, they don't get any feedback. If there is, they have to find the offending frequency(s). They also need to make sure there isn't any conflict between the in-ear wireless frequencies. We had that problem at church a couple of times until our sound guy changed the channels, and that is only with 5 packs. It's pretty unnerving when your pack cuts out and you can't hear yourself (or the musicians you've selected)!

Yeah, that's why they use low freqs to communicate with submarines. And why you can hear some car stereos even though the car is miles away.

Lived in SD for 9 years. My old company would often get a suite in the Western Metal Supply building for games. Thanks for bringing back good memories!

Gaslamp Marriott?

Imma just say it.....Blink-182 is not punk. At best, they are pop-punk which is still not punk. Good on them for doing what they do for so long. Sorry it came at your expense. I could listen to Travis Barker play for 6hrs but not if the rest of the band were playing, too.

Thought the view looked familiar. I stayed at the return leg of a business trip. I don't recall if it was a game or concert but it was quite audible. Luckily we checked in late and they wrapped up whatever they had been doing not long after.
