Only 4500 Miles on the front tires?
I have had BMW's for many many years and I am well versed on how fast these cars/sav's can go through tires. My 545/550's would eat through the rears around 15k which is fast but when you put some spirit in your driving I expect that. The X5 with the 20' wheels does the same so 15-20k is the price you pay for the driving experience. The fronts have always held up really well. I was always able to get 1 1/2 rear tire to front tire ratio which was what I expect. My square winter setups on all my cars would allow me to rotate the wear so I could get 3 seasons before they would be ready for replacing.
Now I picked up a 2011 M3 in OCT of 2012 and had a brand new set of Continental ContiSportContact 3 on the car. The dealer put them on when the car was traded in because the original set was at 4/32 at 14k which caused no alarm and seamed like standard life of a bmw tire. I drove about 2000 miles on the summers before I put on my winter set which 1k of that was a road trip to a family members house and all on the highway. I have put another 2500 miles on the summer set since taking off my winter setup. I did do one track day which was a BMW Loyalty day were we got to drive around the track for about 20 laps (Joliet Autobaun north course) which was a follow the leader event. I didn't feel like I was driving the car that hard but maybe I was. I did my standard tire check and to my surprise, my fronts are measuring 4/32's (10/32 new) and my rears are at 7/32 (9/32 new). This was a complete shock to me. I would have thought it would be the exact opposite. The wear on the fronts tires is even across the tread so that should eliminate the toe/alignment/camber issues. Is this normal? Is this just because I have Conti3's or am I going to eat up front tires this quickly on this car? Thanks
