GT-R vs. Viper ACR
With all of these GT-R threads, and current GT-R news, I wondered about what or who the competitors(price and performance) would be for the GT-R. Typically z06, zR1 came up, but I rarely hear about the 2010 Viper Acr, which seems to be priced around the GT-R's ballpark, and seems to offer amazing performance numbers, even at the N-Ring.
Why is the Viper not in the conversation? They are talking about 700hp in the next Viper, coming out early next year, sounds like a monster, doesn't look bad either. Ran across this thread... http://www.motortrend.com/features/p...d/viewall.html |

ACR is a beast... I love them as well... however... they are just really unpractical... GT-R can be driven daily with Ease... most I've spoken with said ACR is not something that could be driven daily.
Great car though! I had a 1st & 2nd Gen Viper... like to get another someday. Dave

Daily drivability is a personal preference thing.
I'd rather consider everything DD-able for anyone who wishes to DD it. I love how 'misleading' the viper looks. Standing by itself, it looks big. But park another car by it, and you realize how compact it really is. *Sounds like a proper car.* The front mid layout is (imo) perfect. Good balance. Progressive power oversteer (more gas = more oversteer, less gas = less oversteer, unlike some silliness that happens in tail heavy cars). Personally, I'm a little scared of it. I'm not skilled enough to moderate power [at the upper end] throughout turns. I personally would only WOT straight, and cruise through turns. I don't have the skill (or $ to burn) to take any chances. GTR is relatively docile. You can make it spin, but it's not 'violent and sudden'. And it's easy to make it settle down. I can push it pretty hard without stepping into doo-doo. -scheherazade Last edited by scheherazade; 10-25-2011 at 12:25 PM.. |

Yeah government safety regulations now require the Viper to have the traction control. I believe I read that in a Motor Trend article not too long ago, but I don't remember.

I've driven a Viper in the context of a paid half-day of driving numerous exotics from a half dozen manufacturers.
The Viper's handling was so terrible, the instructor demanded that it stay behind him (the lead car) so he could tell if it ended up sliding off the road into a ditch because it seemed to do that with alarming regularity. I found the thing couldn't track steadily around a curve worth crap. All the cars were owned and meticulously maintained my a multi-millionaire, so it wasn't neglect or lack of maintenance. The thing is an actuary's wet dream. I found it dangerous and unpredictable. The Lamborghini Gallardo was by far my favorite. And it was . K |

But, how much track time do you have? Have you ever raced in a SCCA event(s)? Plus, How many years ago did this occur? The reason I ask that last question is because Viper's have evolved over the years (performance-wise and handling). The track times for the ACR, at the Nurburgring, states something about the car, don't ya think? I don't think they would be getting those kinds of numbers if it was dangerous and unpredictable... Even with a professional driver... The Lamborghini Gallardo is almost double the price of the ACR or the GTR. For the price of the Gallardo, you can get both and use one for weekend runs in the twisties\track duty (ACR) and the other (GTR) for DD\track duty... The OP was making a comparison between two cars around the same price range...

Agree with Ferrari... having owned or driven (and raced) all the generations...
GEN I RT/10 Complete nightmare and SCARY for any professional driver to 'tame' GEN II GTS While not a 'scalpel' on the Road Course, could do amazing things in the hands of the right capable person. GEN III GTS By far much 'friendlier' to the average joe... but still enough car to get into trouble easily. Mainly the GEN III weakness, is we don't realize how many people drive every day with their 'traction control nannies' ON... it seems like 95% of people do... and that is what saves Corvettes, Porsches, BMW's, etc... The Viper opposed this technology through it's first 3 generations... and thus 'bit' a lot of less experienced drivers. Dave
