+1 to the former. That is probably the reality. The competition has gotten better.
As to the latter,
some ///M5's can be had at a discount, but most are still well above the ///M3's cost. I did see an 05 ///M5 at Riverside BMW about two months ago that was priced in the mid-40k range. It was IB, SMG, etc. Nice car too!
