You can tell by Sniz's 50mm 1.4 to kandaddy's 50mm 1.8 that the bokeh defocus circles are VERY different.
The main differences between the 1.4 and 1.8 I think is that the 1.4 has better overall defocusing elements (the round defocus balls is a lot more smooth), goes down th 1.4 (doesn't mean too much but helps) and silent wave motor.
With that said, is the extra 300 bucks worth it for the 1.4? you guys make the call.
