It's A LOT of extra cash to go from the 1.8D to the 1.4G.

1.8D - $120
1.4D - $330 (175% more than the 1.8)
1.4G - $435 (260% more than the 1.8 and 32% more than the 1.4D)

I opted for the 1.8D because I knew it would be a less used lens for me. Actually mounted it yesterday for a few shots of the kids for Halloween. But I'm glad I didn't spend the extra money for the 1.4D, and really glad I didn't opt for the 1.4G. Those savings will be put into the 24-70. I was trying to make the 17-35, 50 and 70-200 combo work, but I'm finding that I really need a 24-70.

I'm just hesitant to buy one right now, as I'm thinking it may get a refresh any minute. It has been out in the latest generation for 3 years now, but I don't think Nikon makes updates that quickly. With the recent introduction of the 16-35 with VR, I'm thinking Nikon may do a 24-70 with VR. Although, it took Nikon 6 years to update the 70-200 (VRI from 2003-2009, the VRII from 2009+). CES 2011 is just around the corner, so maybe I'll wait until after that passes to buy the lens...
