Exhaust mod - bypass method - do bypass pipes need to be welded all the way around?

I just had "bypass method" exhaust mod done by my local muffler shop (referred by local BMW tuner). One thing that surprised me - when they had muffler open and welding bypass pipes in - the pipes were not "sealed" - but rather one pipe would go into other with enough welding to hold everything in place but not sealed at all.

Any thoughts on whether this is OK? Unfortunately I have not taken pictures but imagine one pipe sliding inside the other with few spot welds holding structure in place. Clearly some exhaust would leak into muffler cavity but the majority would still go straight through. My concern is that exhaust might "resonate" as a result. It is now definitely more loud and tone is very different below 3.5K vs above.

I have no other mod'd car to compare sound to.

Thank you
