The tariff is aimed at the bargain-basement tire segment and the large volume of these Chinese-made economy tires ("Walmart specials") being dumped into the U.S. market at much lower prices than the competition. There should be no effect on the expensive, high-performance market segment.
You may also recall a recent series of NHTSA warnings issued on the safety of certain brands of Chinese-manufactured tires.
But, I have to ask, if you're considering purchasing tires made in Japan, why would you worry about a tariff on Chinese-made tires?
