The Lufthansa 2for1 also has other benefits, like you don't need to pay when you confirm. Instead you pay ~1 month out (they will tell you the date). If you find a better deal then you can cancel within the window they provide without penalty. Also, if your delivery date changes for some reason the program is more flexible.
I booked a confirmed ticket through the program IAD-MUC-IAD (all non-stop) for something like $1545, which was about $50 less than what I could find online for the same flights, plus all of the benefits outlined above.
Immediately prior to my no-penalty cancellation period expiring I accrued enough FF miles so I was able to book the tickets with those and cancel my 2for1 confirmed ticket.
