Thought I better explain why:

The internal hydraulic pump runs whenever the engine is running, this changes the level in the sump (lower part of the transmission). When the engine is turned off there will be drain back into the transmission raising the fluid level higher than normal running level.

This happens also in automatic transmissions that often require a running level check.
