I managed to get the 3 yr warranty (3rd party, not BMW) for $750. Within the first 6 months of owning my car, I picked up two nails into the sidewall of my PS2s. Dealer charged $500 for replacing the tire (both times) so it has definitely paid for itself and I wouldn't consider it a waste of money.
Here's the big thing though: i was fairly worked up after my first flat but the 2nd time I got a flat, I was actually not mad at all because I knew that the insurance would pick up the tab. I call it the "emotional hedge".
