I only do about 4,000 miles a year and haven't had any major problems with the car at all... yet.
I justify the car to myself (and the wife) on the following basis...
Insurance: £400 a year
Road Tax: £410 a year
Petrol: £840 (approx.)
Servicing: £400 (approx.)
Total: £2050, which equates to about £171 a month.
In general, I'm not a big fan of insurances, and adding another £80 to that monthly total is hard for me to justify. I'm thinking instead to put the extra money in the bank and hope not to have a serious problem for a very long time.

Yes that cost is for one year. You can pay monthly at £87/month.
I am doing around 16,000 miles a year. I must admit so far the car has been very reliable but to be honest I don't think I would take the risk of not having the extended warranty.
