My E46 & E92 M3's both had very notchy shifters. They cannot be rushed. They will get hung up on the gate if you do. This is not a problem as long as you feel your way between gears - I don't know how else to describe it.
It's not like the old muscle car days when you could ram the pistol grip Hurst shifter on the Road Runner from one gear to the next!
