In the UK they don't follow model years the same way. Instead they focus on the registration (license) plate it is licensed under. As such I don't fault a UK editor for using the year of sale vs what the majority of us on here take as a guide from BMW as to what year model they want to call it.
Saloon can also encompass multiple door configurations. "coupé" is also used in the UK but every time someone says it they crush the accented e and it can read a little metrosexually.
