I just built a medium-range computer last August:
i5 2500k now at 4ghz, 8 gigs of ddr3-1600 cas8 ram, gigabyte z68-ud4, ati 6950 1gb. No SSD though. I reused my HD and PSU so total was about 750 for all the new parts including case (CM HAF 922 Plus) and CPU cooler (CM Hyper 212 Plus).
Starting here you have a long way to go to reach that 2k budget so upgrade accordingly!
