you are right. you don't need to pay $600 to be safe. however, some of the less expensive helmets have serious fitmet issues. and this is not just my opinion. guys at HMS told me this, and they deal with these helmets on a daily basis with a variety of people. that said, there are helmets around the ~$300 range with good fitment. HJC is one of them IMO. But when you put on a nice helmet like an Arai, you definitely feel the difference as those thing fit most people like a glove. again, make sure that you get a helmet that fits you right. in an accident, you want proper support; your head should not be moving around in the helmet.
