The problem with most lower cost shipping company is that they works like LTL freight, they will tran-ship your ride...
basically what they do is some trucker will pick it up from Chicago and ship it to a shipping terminal somewhere and then some other trucker will pick up from there and deliver to another spot...so on and on it goes until it make it to CA for you...
The dangerous part is that since it go thru multiple hands, you have higher risks and also takes longer...
You could always look for specialty transport but be prepare to pay good money...
I would recommend to search for car auction companies in the Chicago or neighboring area. They usually will have a good idea on who to go to...
Or
Just fly there and drive the car back, would be a hell of a road trip!
Good Luck and buy insurance, have the seller takes plenty of pictures when they drop it off...
