It's all about maintaining the appropriate ratio.

I have a square setup for autox (BFG Rivals), and I've driven them at numerous events along with maybe 2k miles of road use, and I've had zero issues like you've claimed. ABS works fine, no issues at all. The car has no issues with a square setup in my experience so far.
