Some dealers are just awful.

I helped my sister shop for a commuter. She had one offer from a Hyundai dealership on an Elantra GT. Not only were they offering her $2k less on her trade than everyone else in town, but get this, tried to charge her back for the sales tax savings on the trade value deduction. Yup. $500 line item they wanted her to pay to the dealer for the sales tax on her trade. The amount that is NOT due to the state (or anyone) because of the trade-in value deduction loophole. I've never heard of that before, and that's absolutely abhorrent.

They also had a $600 "reconditioning fee" on her trade (WTF? isn't that part of the trade in offer value?), $1500 worth of dealer installed bullshit on the car itself (window etching, teflon paint sealant, window tint, i.e. $300 worth of stuff), and were only selling it at about $1k below MSRP, which was still another $1500 more than she ended up paying.

She went to another Hyundai dealer across town. They paid about $3k more for the trade (~$1k more than anyone else in town after she got 3-4 written offers), didn't try to tell her to pay the sales tax savings, and sold the car at $1500 less (I think several hundred under invoice).

Every dealer you get will be different, and I don't see a correlation with the brand cars they sell and how much of sleazy scum sucking fish they are.

Same goes for Subaru in town. Two dealers. One throws events for the local Subaru club twice a year, buys them all pizza and hands out tons of free schwag, gives them great deals on sales and service (20% parts discount which is better than any website and 10 or 15% hourly service labor). The other ones does the scum sucking fish routine. *shrugs*
