This is a complex question!

It's what is "in" the suit your potential employer should be evaluating. That said, first impressions are important, too. As for suit style - I'd err on the side of contemporary ... not too "old fashioned" but not too trend setting or out-there! Same with shirt (basic white is always in fashion), tie, shoes and other accessories (e.g. french cuffs with flashy links, etc).

Some corporate environments are more laid back than others - don't get fooled into thinking just because someone tells you an organization is casual you should show up in jeans and a t-shirt. And marketing folks might be keying in on how you package your personal brand too!

If you are being considered for a senior-level / exec role you might take a look at the company's website to see how those already in the seats are dressed!

Last item, personal grooming ... don't overdo or underdo anything ... e.g. cologne etc. and be sure to have a good haircut and know in advance the company's "position" on facial hair (not policy but 'position'!).
