I suspect the feeling most people talk about the CDV causing is being mistaken for the feeling you get from the spring. The change in spring rate would give you a feeling in your foot that the clutch in engaging, but in fact it's really just a change in the pressure on your foot from the pedal. This is why it's hard to shift smooth with the spring still in. Just my guess after reading numerous threads about what the CDV is supposed to do.
