It looks like I am going to echo what others have said, but...

I had a first gen. Cayenne S, and currently have an X5d (the wifes dd). The Cayenne is smaller, it is built better, it is more fun to drive and handles better. Out on the highway the X5 is a more comfortable, if you are hauling stuff the X5 will fit more stuff and the cargo area of the X5 seems to be a bit more suited for hauling, meaning I was always more concerned about doing damage to the Cayenne's interior when I put stuff in it (I think its because the headliner comes down farther and the sloping roof line in the Cayenne.

OP, I would encourage you to test drive the Diesel X5. If you are looking for an only car the Cayenne can't be beat.
