Looks like the M3 still edges out its core "coupe" rivals 4 years hence... Although, the M3 came in second place by losing in outright agility, handling and emotional appeal to the Porsche Boxster S.
Personally I happen to like the looks of the Boxster, but you will only get a very base stripped car for $64k, Audi not possible, and the C63 base again - obviously with out the PP like the test car in the article.
The M3 came in at the lowest price with spartan options save for ZCP and DCT @ $69K. The listed performance times for the M3 in this piece seem slower than most that I have seen.
That being said there is still some life left in the old girl
