There's a growl from the transmission mainshaft bearings that's audible in neutral with the clutch engaged. You can hear it in 5th gear as well if you're driving beside a concrete barrier with the window down. It's normal - just clearance in the bearings so they don't seize when they get hot. This gearbox runs hot enough to need an oil cooler (front RH side wheelwell).
The "supercharger" noise is the camshaft gears - this engine has one cam on each side driven by a chain from the crankshaft, while the second cam is driven off the first by a great big pair of gears on the fronts of the shafts.
