1) J means Junk. It automatically recognizes that the alert is junk so it won't go off to the same alert again. These can be garage doors, weird frequencies, etc.
2) Mine isn't hard wired, however I do have my wire going from the device, between the posts where the passenger sun visor pops into place, and then into the A-Pillar.
