when I was car-shopping, I had the opportunity to get either one of these cars for around the same price...it was a tough call but after test driving both the M3 showed me that it really is on a different (not necessarily better, but very dependent on what the individual driver is looking for) "tier" in BMW's lineup, as the OP mentions.
